The other day I was walking outside in the after spray of a rain storm. The light was back out in late afternoon and I noticed people looking up. As I glanced up in the same direction, a huge vibrant rainbow lit up the sky and I stopped to take it all in and appreciate the show. A moment later I heard a voice behind me, "You stopped to appreciate a rainbow," said an African American woman sitting on a bench with a little boy.

She got up and handed me a small stuffed bear. I was confused about taking something, a present, from a stranger. "I've been carrying this around all day and it's your turn to learn to receive." The sincerity in the woman's voice and face eased my apprehension and I accepted the gift. I carried that bear around for four days with the intention of passing on the idea of acknowledging someone else simply for appreciating. I walked through an entire busy airport, then another, then another on a three stop layover and finally, on the last one I walked past an airport worker laughing at something a co-worker had said.

His smile alone made me smile and I handed him the bear. "What's this for?" he asked confused. "For smiling," was all I could say, realizing I wasn't actually prepared for that part of the exchange. "Someone gave it to me and I'm just passing it along." He took it slightly thrown off but with a look of understanding as I continued on to my gate. I realized later that I'd stopped to feel and connect with a rainbow and seconds later that feeling materialized into a physical gift of human connection. I like this game, pass it on ;-) —Lynsey Dyer
